Nidar’s Troika

nidar troikaTroika is one of those candies that comes only in Norwegian — the label is in Norwegian, the web site is in Norwegian, and so on. Nidar is one of three companies that consolidated to form Orkla Confectionary and Snacks in 2013, and is a major confectioner throughout the Baltic region, with companies in Norway, Sweden, Denmark, Finland, Latvia and Estonia. As is more or less the norm these days, Orkla is firmly committed to sustainability — preserving the rainforests (no rainforest, no chocolate, after all) — and is a signatory to the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals.

Troika is a candy bar with “softig gelé, treffet og marsipan dekket med deilig, mørk sjokolade.” Which is to say, it’s raspberry jelly layered with marzipan and truffle and covered in dark chocolate. (OK, I cheated — search engine to the rescue with a description in English.) The bar weighs in at 66 g, or about 2.3 oz.

In spite of the jelly and truffle, it’s a rather firm bite, with a good texture — not too soft, not brittle, and satisfying to chew. The flavors blend thoroughly — you know there’s chocolate and berries, but they come across as one thing, while the marzipan more of less is subsumed in the other flavors. My only objection is that, to my taste, it’s quite sweet, which, given the composition, is no real surprise.

It’s a pretty nice treat, actually, if you want something sweet with chocolate and perhaps a bit more.

Robert M. Tilendis lives a deceptively quiet life. He has made money as a dishwasher, errand boy, legal librarian, arts administrator, shipping expert, free-lance writer and editor, and probably a few other things he’s tried very hard to forget about. He has also been a student of history, art, theater, psychology, ceramics, and dance. Through it all, he has been an artist and poet, just to provide a little stability in his life. Along about January of every year, he wonders why he still lives someplace as mundane as Chicago; it must be that he likes it there.
