While I’ve never been to Texas, I’ve been a fan of Shiner ever since I tasted their incredible Bohemian Black Lager. So when a friend brought over Shiner’s brand-new winter warmer brew, Texas Warmer, I had to give it a try. And now I’m hoping this brew will become an annual tradition for the brewery, as I’d like to make it an annual tradition of my own.
When poured, there’s a beautiful head, nice and tan, to compliment the brownish red of the brew. Thick, almost creamy, but doesn’t overstay its welcome.
The nose hints at the spice and earthiness in the sip. But it doesn’t fully express it. First taste? Hoppy. Full stop. Then again anyone could guess as much by looking at the label, with it’s illustration of a hop cone loud and proud. Then there’s the spice, which comes at you strong, but doesn’t beat you to death, or numb your taste-buds to anything else. Then there’s a hint of caramel…or is that the sweetness of the malt? Either way, it’s good stuff. Robust, but not heavy. Nice trick, that.
Texas Warmer would pair well with stews, mellow cheeses, or roasted veg. This is not a beer to pair with spicy food; it would lead to dissonance or overkill on the taste-buds. The exception to that rule would be a slice of gingerbread with some heavy cream, or a nicely iced gingerbread cookie. The combination of ginger, creaminess and this beer’s spice would make a lovely midnight snack for Santa…or anyone else.
